Beginning with native hardwoods and traditional techniques, I craft Shaker designs that transform every day objects into art forms that retain their practical value. The timeless beauty of the natural world is invoked in the simplicity of the design. Their practical usefulness encourages us to savor the beauty of the present moment while their heirloom construction is an enduring promise of the future.

About Shaker Products   About David Kenyon Fast

My Shaker Oval Boxes are authentic reproductions of those made by the now defunct religious sect from 19th century New England. I handcraft the boxes, and my other products, from a variety of hardwoods, including walnut, black cherry, and Saskatchewan White Birch, our province's official tree.

The boxes are constructed to endure the rigors of time. They contain no glue, only tiny wooden dowels to secure the top and bottom. The copper tacks will not rust or stain the wood. The slender fingers, known as swallowtails, are not only aesthetically pleasing—they also allow the box to expand and contract without splitting the wood. The design stems from the Shakers' belief that form follows function.

Shaker boxes were originally developed over 200 years ago, and some of them still exist. I hope that the boxes I create will stand the test of time, and that you will receive as much enjoyment in owning them as I do in handcrafting them.

I have been creating items from trees for two decades, ever since I discovered the satisfaction of working wood. As a woodworker, I prefer the clean and simple designs of the Shaker and Mission furniture styles. I like to craft items that are elegant yet practical.

I live and work in the northern boreal forests of Saskatchewan, on the edge of Lac La Ronge. This land is beautiful and timeless, qualities I seek to capture in everything I create.
